FAQS

Learn more about Respite Care and its benefits

What is Respite Care?

Respite care is usually defined as temporary relief for family caregivers from the ongoing responsibility of caring for an individual of any age with special needs. It is a break from caregiving for a loved one. Respite care typically involves bringing in care providers that can provide medical or companion care to the individual requiring care so that the caregiver can spend time independently of their loved one.

Why Do Caregivers Decline or Feel Reluctant to Receive Respite Care?

Answer: There are several reasons why families decline respite care. Some of the most common things said by families include:

"I feel guilty"
"No one else can take care of my loved one"
"I can take care," "I should take care" or "it is my responsibility to take care"
"I don’t understand the meaning and benefits of respite care and don’t have time to gather this information"

Caring for yourself is an important part of caring for others, respite care can help!

Is Respite Care Covered Under Medicaid in Colorado?

Answer: Federal programs (like Medicaid and Medicare) that are managed at the state level have complex rules and eligibility requirements. Rules and regulations vary by state and often by county. In order to get the best guidance possible, contact your Medicaid Office or Department of Human Services. The CRC's Respite Care Navigation Guide is a resource to help family caregivers understand different funding streams, and how to access respite care.

 What is ABA?

"Applied Behavioral Analysis" ABA is skill development combined with teaching and reinforcing replacement behaviors.  Our providers do an assessment and determine what skills are missing.  We teach skills in the areas of social, communication and executive functioning.  We work on things like increasing attention span, turn taking, friendship skills, following instructions, staying on task etc. We do an assessment to figure out the function of behavior and teach replacement skills to help reduce problem behaviors. Each treatment plan is individualized to that child based on their specific needs, goals, and behaviors.

STATS

01

REDUCE CAREGIVER STRESS:

Approximately 40% of family caregivers of individuals with disabilities or chronic health conditions report feeling high levels of emotional stress and burnout. Respite care provides caregivers with much-needed breaks, allowing them to recharge and reduce their stress levels. (Source: National Alliance for Caregiving and AARP, "Caregiving in the U.S." report)

02

IMPROVE CAREGIVER HEALTH:

Studies show that caregivers who regularly use respite care have better physical and mental health outcomes. They are less likely to experience health issues related to chronic stress, such as depression and anxiety. Taking breaks through respite care allows caregivers to focus on their own well-being and maintain a healthier lifestyle. (Source: ARCH National Respite Network and Resource Center)

03

ENHANCE FAMILY RELATIONSHIPS:

Respite care has been shown to strengthen family relationships and prevent caregiver burnout. When caregivers have the opportunity to take time for themselves, they can return to caregiving with renewed energy and a more positive attitude, leading to improved interactions with their loved ones. Respite care helps create a healthier family dynamic and fosters stronger bonds. (Source: Family Caregiver Alliance, "Caregiving and Respite: Research and Practice" report)
